Rock Throw
A storm of shattering stone hurls earth's raw fury at every foe at once.
Rock Throw is an Earth-element Psynergy from the original Golden Sun (2001, Game Boy Advance), one of Isaac's earliest offensive abilities. It calls forth a volley of jagged stones that strike every enemy on the field, making it a reliable area-of-effect attack in the early and mid portions of the adventure.
As a foundational Earth Psynergy, Rock Throw exemplifies the franchise's design philosophy: each element offers a small, distinct toolkit that grows with the user. For Isaac, a young man whose bond with the earth gives him a grounded, steady temperament, Rock Throw is both a practical combat tool and a narrative symbol of his connection to the soil and stone of the world he travels through.

Lore & Background
In the world of Golden Sun, Psynergy flows from the four elemental Doraemons and the Doraemon crystals embedded in the land. Earth Psynergies channel the slow, patient power of stone, mineral, and soil. Rock Throw, as its name suggests, is the most elemental of these abilities: the user focuses their will, and the ground itself seems to recoil, launching a scatter of rocks toward the opposing party. There is no incantation, no elaborate ritual—just a grunt of effort and the clatter of stone on stone.
Isaac, the group's Earth psynergy user, is often the quiet, reliable member of the party. His Psynergies reflect that steadiness. Where Ivalda's Water Psynergies splash and flow, or Gai's Fire Psynergies blaze and consume, Isaac's Earth abilities are blunt, physical, and dependable. Rock Throw sits at the base of his offensive kit: it will not one-shot a boss, but in the early dungeons where the party is still fragile, a single use can turn a dangerous fight into a manageable one.
The Doraemon that bestows Rock Throw is found in the early stretches of the journey, reinforcing the game's pacing: players gain a new tool just as the old ones begin to feel insufficient. The little Doraemon, perched on a shelf or tucked behind a rock, wiggles its stubby arms and chirps before the knowledge transfers into Isaac's Psynergy gauge.
In Their Own Story
The cavern beyond the collapsed bridge stank of wet iron and old rain. Three shadowed figures coiled on the far ledge, their eyes catching the faint glow of the party's torch. Ivalda raised her hands, water gathering at her fingertips, but the creatures were too spread out. Gai's fire would singe the stalactites and rain molten rock on their own heads.
Isaac stepped forward. He didn't raise his arms dramatically. He just planted his boots, closed his eyes, and pressed his palms flat against the cavern floor. The stone groaned. A hairline crack spidered outward from his hands, and then—
A dozen rocks, no bigger than his fist, tore free of the wall and the ground in a ragged arc. They struck all three figures at once, a sound like a handful of knucklebones dropped on a table. The shadows scattered, shrieking, dissolving into the dark.
Isaac opened his eyes. "That was… fine," he said, and went back to checking his pack.
Reader's Guide
Element: Earth. Effect: Deals physical-type damage to all enemies on the field. It is one of Isaac's earliest Psynergies, learned by interacting with a Doraemon in the early game (before the party has progressed deep into the first set of dungeons). The Doraemon appears in a standard indoor or overworld location and, upon interaction, transfers the Psynergy into Isaac's loadout.
Tactically, Rock Throw is invaluable in the first few dungeon encounters where the party is still low-level and multi-target enemies (such as groups of small beasts or insectoid foes) would otherwise chip away at the team over several turns. Because it hits every enemy simultaneously, it can clean up swarms in one or two uses, conserving PP for later, tougher fights. Its Earth typing also means it is not resisted by the common early-game enemy types, making it a safe, predictable damage source.
Narratively, Rock Throw anchors Isaac's role as the steady, physical counterpart to the more flashy Fire and Water Psynergies. It is the ability a player reaches for when they want a simple, reliable answer without overthinking elemental matchups. As the party levels up and Isaac learns higher-tier Earth Psynergies, Rock Throw fades from active use, but it remains a fond early-game memory for many players.
Did You Know?
- Rock Throw is one of the few Psynergies in the original Golden Sun that hits all enemies at once, making it a crowd-control staple in early multi-enemy encounters.
- Isaac's Earth Psynergies, including Rock Throw, are themed around physical, tangible force rather than the more abstract elemental effects seen in Fire or Water, reflecting his grounded personality.
- The Doraemon that teaches Rock Throw is encountered before the party faces its first major dungeon boss, ensuring players have a reliable AoE option when the action intensifies.
- In the Golden Sun universe, Psynergies are not innate talents but learned skills transferred by Doraemons, meaning a character could theoretically learn any Psynergy if they found the right Doraemon.
