Cyclone

A howling ring of water that shatters every foe in its path.

Cyclone is a Water-element Psynergy from the original Golden Sun (2001, Game Boy Advance) that calls down a spiraling gale of pressurized water to strike every enemy on the battlefield. It occupies a mid-to-late tier slot in the Water Psynergy progression, sitting between the more basic Waterfall and the devastating Tidal Wave, and rewards players who have invested in water-based combat.

As a group-damage move, Cyclone is one of the more reliable crowd-control tools in the roster. It shines in dungeons and overworld encounters where multiple foes line up, letting a single cast clear the board without burning through individual-target attacks. Because it is learned through the Doraemon item system, it also serves as a small narrative beat: a character bonding with a new element of the world's Dorei energy.

Lore & Background

In the world of Golden Sun, the four elements—Water, Earth, Fire, and Light—flow through the Dorei, the ancient energy that once powered the great Dorei towers. Psynergy is the art of channeling that energy through the body, and each element carries its own temperament. Water, associated with adaptability and relentless pressure, expresses itself in Psynergy as jets, cascades, and spirals of force.

Cyclone embodies the Water element's most kinetic expression: rather than a single column or a broad sheet, the energy coils into a rotating vortex that expands outward, touching every target in the arena. In the in-game presentation, the screen fills with a churning blue-white spiral, and each enemy is struck as the ring passes over them. It is a move that feels less like a weapon and more like a weather event made personal.

The Doraemon through which Cyclone is learned is found in the wider world, often tucked into a cave or hidden behind a puzzle. Picking it up and using it in a party member's inventory triggers a brief learning sequence, after which the Psynergy joins that character's loadout. The act of learning is treated in-universe as a moment of attunement—the character feeling the Dorei recognize them and grant a new facet of elemental control.

In Their Own Story

The corridor in the underground aqueduct was slick with condensation, and the three stone golems blocking the passage had just finished their grinding, ear-splitting roar. Iona wiped a trickle of water from her brow, felt the familiar hum of Dorei rising in her palms, and whispered the name she'd practiced for weeks.

The air pressure dropped. A low moan built in the pipes overhead, and then the water in the channel beside the corridor lifted, spiraled, and *shrieked* outward in a perfect ring. The vortex swept over all three golems in a single breath, cracking their basalt faces, sending chips of stone skittering across the wet floor. When the last echo faded, the passage was clear, and the only sound was the soft drip-drip-drip of water settling back into the channel.

Behind her, she heard someone whistle. "Show-off," they called. She smiled, let her hands drop, and kept walking.

Reader's Guide

Element: Water. Effect: Deals Water-element damage to all enemies on the field. It is a mid-tier group attack, more powerful than the earlier Waterfall but less devastating than the late-game Tidal Wave.

Learning: Cyclone is acquired through a Doraemon item found in the overworld. Once in the party's inventory, the item is used to teach the Psynergy to a character. The move then appears in that character's Psynergy menu for use in battle.

Tactical use: Cyclone excels in encounters with two or more enemies, where its all-targets hit outperforms single-target moves on a per-PS-cost basis. It is especially useful in dungeon crawls where groups of mid-level foes appear together. Because it is Water-element, it is strong against Fire-type enemies and weak against Earth-type ones, so checking the enemy's elemental affinity before committing PS is advisable.

Narrative role: Like all Psynergy, learning Cyclone is a small story beat—a character deepening their bond with the Dorei and the Water element. It marks a visible step in the party's growing mastery over the world's elemental forces, and the Doraemon's discovery location often ties into a side area or puzzle that rewards exploration.
